POST GAME QUOTES

PIERRE SAGE

“The boos are normal because we don’t have the result. The noise is the consequence of the result of the team, and at the moment we don’t have what we expect. Inside, we are just really focused on solutions. How to be better, how to create the conditions to compete, and we will continue our work. It’s normal that people lose patience when you lose, because everybody wants to win.”

CHRIS RICHARDS

“As players on the pitch, we have to hold each other accountable and get each other out of this slump that we’re in. We know from the inside that we, as players, must be doing better. We must have these hard conversations with each other and hold each other accountable. We’re the only ones who can get us out of this.”

BOB’S POINT OF VIEW

Bob White was a coach at Palace under the tenure of Steve Coppell and Alan Smith and will be sharing his point of view each week in our review article.

“Following a good result against Besiktas on Thursday, expectations were probably raised for today’s game against Newcastle, whose away form had been patchy this season.

Palace produced a solid display in the first half, looking more compact defensively while transitioning smoothly from a 5-4-1 shape out of possession to a 3-4-3 when in possession. Although we lacked a cutting edge in the final third, the signs looked promising at half-time.

However, I’m not sure what the half-time instructions were from the manager and coaching staff, but we were incredibly passive and disorganised for the first 15 minutes or so of the second half. Consequently, we were punished by conceding two goals, which effectively ended the contest, as we huffed and puffed with little effect going forward for the remainder of the game. Once again, we conceded by failing to deal with crosses into our penalty area. It’s becoming a recurring pattern: an inability to stop crosses at source or defend them effectively when they come into the box.

More concerning is the fact that we look capable of conceding at least two goals every game. Sadly, those are relegation-level statistics, however they are dressed up.

More broadly, we can all point to different factors to explain such disappointing performances and results: recruitment, tactics, the demands of the Europa League, a lack of leadership, injuries, and even the atmosphere at Selhurst Park, among many others.

However, everything points to a long winter ahead in the battle to avoid relegation. Many fans believe sacking the manager is the best solution, but that begs the question: who would take the job, and would it make any real difference given the current squad and fixture demands?

I don’t believe we should doubt the commitment of most of the players in the squad. In that respect, despite the disappointing result, Pino was excellent. Technically, he was a class above most players on the pitch and showed a feisty edge when required.

We move on to Fulham in midweek, and perhaps some radical squad rotation is required for this League Cup tie. The fixtures over the next few weeks certainly present some challenges. The question may be who will be leading us in those games. Time will tell.”

TEB VERDICT

Another game, another frustrating afternoon, and another reminder of the issues that continue to hold Palace back.

There was no shortage of effort from the Eagles, and at times they showed enough quality to suggest they could take something from the contest. However, football matches are often decided in the penalty areas, and Palace once again came up short where it mattered most. Defensive lapses, a lack of ruthlessness in key moments, and an inability to control the game when it was in the balance ultimately handed the initiative to Newcastle.

The concern for Palace supporters is that this was not an isolated performance. Many of the same problems that have surfaced throughout the campaign were evident once more, leaving fans to wonder when, or if, meaningful progress will arrive, heaping the pressure on Pierre Sage. The attacking intent was there, but confidence looks fragile, and every defensive mistake seems to carry a heavy price.

Newcastle deserved credit for the way they capitalised on their opportunities, but Palace will rightly feel that elements of this defeat were self-inflicted. Until the Eagles can find greater consistency and resilience, results like this will continue to undermine any momentum they manage to build.

TEB Rating – 6 / 10; A disappointing but familiar story. Palace were competitive for periods, but competitive is no longer enough. The pressure is growing, the questions are mounting, and answers are needed sooner rather than later.
