Mateta Bags Hat-trick As Palace Take Point Late On Against Bournemouth

A game very much of two halves at the French striker celebrated his international debut with a treble for the Eagles including a late equaliser from the spot, but should have netted an even later winner.

POST GAME QUOTES

OLIVER GLASNER

“I know how our games are going, our last game against Liverpool and our away game to Everton was the same. It’s that last goal in the extra time. I am so proud of the performance today not the result. How we played and how many chances we created.

We were ruthless and every chance was a goal. The mentality of the team and the problems we caused. There has not been many teams that has caused Palace so many problems. It was an incredible display.

I don’t think they were that much better in the first half. When we go in details, I think it was an even game, they were ruthless and we said we would stick with the plan and we did.

I think everyone enjoyed it. I never doubt our character because we have shown and proved it so many times.”

ANDONI IRAOLA

“It was an entertaining game, if we talk about football we were better in the first half and they were better in the second. They punished us with their physicality. I cannot be happy, I am not pleased, I am upset and I am angry because of their late goal, I cannot accept it.

Not to win it because someone called a penalty and I think VAR was influenced by the previous decision. That is the only explanation I can find. They were punishing us and it was a difficult moment when they scored to make it 2-2 but then we got it back and showed some character. To concede like this is difficult.”

TEB VERDICT

This was quite a game between two sides that have started the Premier League season very well. The visitors racing into a two goal lead showing exactly why they are where they are in the table, taking advantage of a poor opening half from the hosts.

The second half was absolute chaos with the Eagles fighting back to equalise, only to concede again, only to equalise again, only to miss a late opportunity to take all three points.

It is hard to complain about taking a share of the points, but it was always going to be interesting to see the reaction from the team after that first defeat in such a long time right before the international break.

While we can park that first half performance, the reaction came in that second half, and what a reaction it was matched by the Selhurst crowd or needed no invitation to get behind the team.

Jean-Philippe Mateta will take the plaudits for his hattrick, and rightly so, as it has been some week for him, making his internation debut and scoring in a France shirt along with an online spat with Wilfried Zaha.

Oliver Glasner was very diplomatic in his post-match reaction, praising his players for their fight back but not particularly pleased with the result, obviously disappointed that his players did not go on to take all three points.

It is hard to pinpoint what the problem was in the first half, the defence looked very much at odds with each other and the midfield found it difficult to cope with the lively opposition. Glasner seemed to work his magic at the interval as the hosts came out a very different side which saw the hosts gradually finding it as difficult as Palace did with them in the first.

Fair play to this group of players, that was quite a turnaround and while we can be disappointed that Mateta did not net that very late chance to take on all three points, it was more important not to lose the game.
