TEB VERDICT

First things first, contrary to popular belief on social media and beyond, you  do not deserve to win any game no matter the opponent, you have to win in. The poor form for the visitors was going to end at some point but the disappointment is the manner of it. We handed the win to Southampton courtesy of mistakes after making a good start to the after back to back home defeats. With such fragile confidence, such mistakes had detrimental effects and apart from a late burst, the Eagles were heading out of the FA Cup as soon as that second goal went in.

Where do we go from here? A remainder of a season with the league to concentrate on and with now three home defeats in a row at home, there will no doubt be an element of looking over our shoulders for much of it.

Fresh blood in this transfer window could help but that remains to see if that will happen. It is hard to put a finger on exactly what the problem is. Vieira went with a line up many had been calling for and while the performance was not actually that terrible, we are once again writing about another defeat. We continue to point at the fact that the lack of progressive full backs is causing this team a huge issue, both defensively and offensively.

The next few weeks are vitally important as to how the remainder of the season will pan out, and it is down to Vieira and his players to get things back on track. We are not in a precarious position in the Premier League by all means, but these recent defeats will affect confidence, as could clearly be seen today.

POST GAME QUOTES

PATRICK VIEIRA

“We had some really good periods during the game. We managed to score that first goal. But we had opportunities to hurt them a little bit more, but we didn’t take those chances in a really good period. With the quality they have on set-pieces, they managed to score that goal – we lost momentum and conceded the second goal in the second half.

With a lot of frustration, we’re out of the competition. This is where we have to improve. This is the mindset we have to improve. That will take time because of the group of players that we have. This is something that we’re pushing and working on.”

NATHAN JONES

“A tough week is an understatement really in terms of everything, but no, it is really important. We bounced back with a performance and a win, but we got both today. You know, we got a real hard-working, solid performance. I thought at times we were excellent in possession.

In the first half we had to get to grips with the game. Then we really went after that and I’m really pleased with the aggression we showed and the intent to win the game. After the tough start, and with everything that’s been going on, we showed real character today and I’m really proud of the group.”
