TEB VERDICT

This was a hugely disappointing loss against a side that looked to prove a point without a star player that refused to play for them. Regardless, Palace were matching their hosts until going behind thanks to poor decision making by Hennessey which proved the catalyst for this defeat. If Allardyce did not know before, he will be all too aware now what kind of job he has on his hands. That first win is needed and quickly but more than that, a performance that at least comes close to earning three points.

PLAYER RATINGS (courtesy of Who Scored)

13 Wayne Hennessey (5.0) – At fault for two of the goals and these errors are proving costly. Interesting to see if Allardyce will stand for it as much as previous managers have.

2 Joel Ward (7.2) – Put in a good shift as he continued in the unaccustomed left back slot.

5 James Tomkins (6.3) – Should have scored with an opportunity that came against his former side.

27 Damien Delaney (6.1) – Certainly not lacking any passion but found doing the simple things difficult.

6 Scott Dann (5.8) – A far from comanding showing at the back from the captain who looked to struggle all afternoon.

18 James McArthur (6.1) – Great to see the midfield machine back from injury but even he could do little to prevent this defeat. Replaced by 14 Lee Chung-yong (5.8) on 70 minutes who could not exert himself on the game.

7 Yohan Cabaye (6.1) – Hit a terrific volley which was unfortunately straight at the goalkeeper but stuck to his task as much as possible.

42 Jason Puncheon (5.8) – An off day like many others and found his usual possession of the ball hard to come by.

16 Joe Ledley (6.1) – Played his part in a tough midfield battle being replaced by 31 Jeffrey Schlupp (6.0) on 81 minutes but the debutant had little time to make an impact.

10 Andros Townsend (6.3) – Another disappointing outing for the winger which further encourages fans to question his place in the team. Replaced by 8 Loic Remy (5.8) on 70 minutes in a bid to get something out of the game but has precious little chances.

17 Christian Benteke (6.8) – The big Belgian is far more than just a target man and the sooner we look to play to his strengths the better. One great chance with a header but

Unused substitutes – Julian Speroni, Matthieu Flamini, Zeki Fryers, Martin Kelly

WHAT THE MANAGERS SAID

‘We don’t have the capability to make sure we don’t lose. That’s the first thing to put right at a struggling club and at the moment we don’t know how to get that result. Today after 70 minutes we didn’t look in any real trouble, but once we gifted them the first goal we lost our shape and our discipline.’ – SAM ALLARDYCE courtesy of BBC Sport

‘Payet is a great player so you are losing quality, but the team showed it is about the team and not individuals. This is a great example for that. So let’s talk about Carroll, or Darren Randolph, or Mark Noble. Michail Antonio had flu and a temperature of 38.4C last night. He showed brilliant determination, brilliant quality. That’s what I want to talk about.’ – SLAVEN BILIC courtesy of BBC Sport
