TEB VERDICT

Once again it was defensive errors that were the Eagles downfall as the pressure mounts on boss Alan Pardew. To find a way back into the game from being two goals down so early showed real character but so disappointing to lose to another counter attack after perhaps foolishly seeking a late winner.

PLAYER RATINGS (courtesy of Who Scored)

30 Steve Mandanda (5.2) – Another game without a clean sheet for the French international but he uncharacteristically contributed to the second goal and arguably shares some of the blame for the opener too. Still made some good save throughout the rest of the game.

2 Joel Ward (6.1) – Switched to left back in an effort to cure the full back problems they continued while Ward took time to adjust on return to the unnatural position.

5 Scott Dann (7.3) – Questions remain about the fitness of the captain following his recent return but still put in a shift at the heart of defence.

27 Damien Delaney (6.0) – A return to the starting line up for the Irishman in a return of the strong partnership with Dann but he struggled to cope with the counter attacking hosts.

34 Martin Kelly (5.9) – Playing in his more comfortable right back slot but continued to be a weak link. Replaced by 19 Zeki Fryers (6.3) on 59 minutes providing a left footed presence to the position which allowed Ward a return to right back.

18 James McArthur (6.5) -The usual workmanlike performance from the Scott but a little more subdued that usual. Always involved and close to scoring on two separate occasions. Replaced by 16 Joe Ledley (5.9) on 88 minutes who had little time to impress.

7 Yohan Cabaye (7.2) – Continued to show some of his best form for the club and a lot of what Palace did well came through the French midfielder.

42 Jason Puncheon (6.4) – First start since returning from injury and he looked a little rusty. Guilty of wasting possession on two occasions which led to goals. Replaced by 21 Connor Wickham (7.0) on 59 minutes who scored with his first touch and made a real nuisance of himself.

11 Wilfried Zaha (7.7) -Worked hard throughout as a provider, great ball whipped in for Wickham to score and was the focal point in the fight back and showed real signs of improvement on tracking back.

10 Andros Townsend (7.9) -Impressive performance from the winger, always trying to work something from out wide and cutting inside. Won the penalty that led to the equaliser and could have scored another equaliser with almost the last kick of the game but saw his stinging shot hit the post.

17 Christian Benteke (7.9) – Stepped up to the mark when asked and scored from the penalty spot after missing earlier in the season. Always in the right position but wasted a few chances. On another day, may have had a hat-trick.

Unused substitutes – 13 Wayne Hennessey, 5 James Tomkins, 4 Mathieu Flamini, 14 Chung-yong Lee

WHAT THE MANAGERS SAID

‘We’ve made errors for the goals but played well and it frustrates me to say that. It’s daft mistakes which have cost us. I think we got carried away at 2-2 and over committed at a set play and it cost us. This defeat is a big blow for us because we have some tough games coming up. We’re going to have to be strong after the international break and get some results. We dominated and actually played some good football today.” – ALAN PARDEW courtesy of BBC Sport

‘I think we deserved the points by the final whistle. It was a real ding-dong of a game. Both teams went at it and I’ve been really pleased with the mentality of the group to finish in such a good way.’ – SEAN DYCHE courtesy of BBC Sport.
