“I think our first half performance should have put us ahead, but we didn’t score and then made mistakes. We must take positives and convert into very good things. Sometimes you deserve but don’t score. What we must keep from the first half is how we play, but we did make easy mistakes.

We play with the ball and can lose it under pressure, but today we lost it when not under pressure. That’s something we must cancel.

In the second half we had less energy. I made the substitutions because I thought we could play more dynamic, but it didn’t happen. We gave up a little bit. We have to understand when it’s 2-0 the game is not over.”

They carried momentum into the second half and it was an uphill battle from there. Pre-season we saw a lot of different things, new players coming in. What can you say after another loss away at Everton?

A good first half showing plenty of promise, creating several key chances, but it was always going to be the case that the longer the game went on we would be made to pay, and so it came to pass.

Conceding a sloppy second goal and what looks likely another horrid knee injury for Chadi Riad knocked the visitors mentally, and there really was no way back. The second half could not have gone much worse.  

First game of the season, and while it is a defeat, Pierre Sage will take plenty from the game, while time is needed to incorporate the new additions into the squad.

It would be foolish to not think that it was not ideal preparation for the game with several rumours linking Ismaila Sarr with a move to Turkey. With the Senegalese international missing the game due to ‘injury’. He is not a player that we can afford to lose after watching his teammates miss chances in this opening weekend defeat.
