The undefeated run ended in some style up at Goodison Park and the best way to describe it is the post match press conference where Patrick Vieira was asked what went wrong? His reply – ‘everything’.

TEB VERDICT
There was not one problem that contributed to this defeat – there were several. Palace got away with a win against Leeds and draw against Leicester by not playing that well, but this time around.
A string of poor performances across the pitch meant that the Eagles could get very little going and were toothless in attack throughout the afternoon. We had suspected it would be a difficult game as soon as Cheick Doucoure received his fifth booking of the season on Tuesday, but not quite this difficult.
The midfield is an issue even with Doucoure in the team and it really felt like Luka Milivojevic was hung out to dry with no help in the middle of the park. Let’s be honest, the Serbian is not on the same level as the Mali international, he probably wasn’t in his prime.
The other issue is that more and more we are seeing that some players are not comfortable with the pressing game as much as others – the likes of Eberechi Eze and Michael Olise do not find it a natural part of their game, understandably.
And finally, we need more progressive full backs who can play with the ball. Too often the play is slowed down when the ball ends up with our full backs. You only have to take a look at how Semedo played for Wolves against Palace in the week – yes, they lost and he did cost them in the region of £30 million but that is the kind of player we need either side of the centre backs.
Of course, Patrick Vieira will see this squad as a work in progress (he probably hoped it would be further on than it is) but this game clearly highlighted a number of those issues. Having said that, there is no excuse for not having any fight.
POST GAME QUOTES
PATRICK VIEIRA – “We didn’t play, we didn’t compete and we made it easy for Everton. Everything was missing in our game today. This is the first time that I have a bad feeling about the way we performed. We let ourselves down We were second-best in every department. In the end we got what we deserved.”
FRANK LAMPARD – “I’m absolutely delighted. It was everything we needed today. We’ve been on a tough run of games which we have competed in but today had everything. It had the organisation, the aggression and real energy in the team and them some real quality goals from us against a real quality opposition.”
