TEB VERDICT

A disappointing result in more ways than one against n Reds side that will no doubt challenge at the top of the table. Conceding two goals from set pieces which is usually a strong point will no doubt need to be worked on back at the training ground. However, play like this after eliminating the defensive frailties against most other opponents as well as Puncheon and Townsend back in the starting line up will likely bring more wins than losses.

PLAYER RATINGS (courtesy of Who Scored)

30 STEVE MANDANDA (6.6) – A couple of superb saves while arguably could do better for both goals conceded from corners is perhaps a little harsh.

2 JOEL WARD (7.2) – Struggled in a frenetic first half where both sides showed their defensive problems.

5 JAMES TOMKINS (7.0) – Work is needed in the partnership with Dann having both had very little time together so far this season but the former Hammer is improving with every game.

6 SCOTT DANN (6.2) – A very welcome back to the starting eleven but looked a little rusty having been thrust into the action against a strong offensive opponent.

34 MARTIN KELLY (6.4) – Battled well but without a left foot, continues to be that square peg in a round hole.

18 JAMES MCARTHUR (8.2) – Worked hard throughout as we have come to expect from the Scottish international and a brace of headed goals to boot in an excellent all round performance. Replaced by 9 FRAIZER CAMPBELL (6.0) on 86 minutes with little time to make any impression on the game.

7 YOHAN CABAYE (7.0) – A superb early challenge in the middle of the park set the tone for his improving performances of late. Faded as the game went on in what was a tough midfield battle.

16 JOE LEDLEY (6.1) – Struggled to have an impact on the game against a quick and talented midfield formation. Replaced by 42 JASON PUNCHEON (6.3) on 74 minutes who manged one strike in anger that flew just over the bar.

11 WILFRIED ZAHA (7.4) – Excellent but equally frustrating showing from the winger. Subject of two penalty shouts that were waved away but worked hard up against a quick full back which proved an intriguing match up.

14 CHUNG-YONG LEE (6.0) – Another player that found it difficult to have an impact on the game until he moved centrally. Replaced by 10 ANDROS TOWNSEND (6.1) on 66 minutes who did not have the expected effect with Palace chasing the game.

17 CHRISTIAN BENTEKE (7.3) – Hard working against his former team who seemed to have him worked out. That did not stop him having chances and unlucky not to win penalty.

Unused substitutes – 13 Wayne Hennessey, 27 Damien Delaney, 19 Zeki Fryers, 4 Mathieu Flamini,

WHAT THE MANAGERS SAID

‘The first half was difficult on the sideline. We talked about putting them under pressure but in the first period we did not start well. We worked hard and defended well but we should have put more pressure on Liverpool. But they are a good team. Two set plays though, that is not us. We have to tighten up on that area. Our centre-backs are good but they got done. It is something we have to work on.’ – ALAN PARDEW courtesy of BBC Sport.

‘In the first fifteen minutes we were not really at 100% then in half an hour we created chance after chance. It was a close game and a deserved win at the end. I’m a very happy man. The defensive error we made for the first goal is because we are not at the limit of our concentration. The aggressiveness was not there at the start of the game. But I saw a lot of wonderful things offensively.’ – JURGEN KLOPP courtesy of BBC Sport.

  1. Thanks for your comments and analysis Jay. I’ve been a Palace fan since 1960 when my dad took me as a five year old to Palace beat Accrington Stanley 9-3 (think I’m right on that score). For the past 27 years I’ve been living in America but I’m just as much an ardent fan as I ever was. Maybe more now! And I have the delightful luxury of watching every game all the way through on US TV. That said, it’s great to hear your perspective as someone who’s ‘on the ground’ so to speak. Thank again Jay and keep up the good service you provide!
