New Challenge Excites The Palace Ladies

It has been anything but a quiet summer at Palace Ladies.

Following the successes of last season, it could never be a case of sit back and hope that things would work out well as the club heads into the top tier of the FA Women’s Premier League for the 2016-17 season. So, to a person, from on the pitch to behind the scenes, plenty of hard work has been taking place.

In terms of the first team squad, Dean Davenport has been keen to keep the spirit and core squad from the ‘Invincibles’ season;

“Part of what gave us the edge, last season was an amazing togetherness within the camp. This is something that will be vitally important to us, in tougher challenges over the coming months.”

Part of the conundrum faced by Davenport has been maintaining the crucial team camaraderie, whilst bringing in new players to help bolster and improve the squad;

“We knew what we wanted in terms of additions, and to be fair, we knew who some of the players were. These were players that we knew of and believed would fit well with what we stand for and what we have going on. It was, at times, frustrating due to rules around being able to talk to players at certain times. Thankfully, a number of stars aligned and we managed to get some great deals over the line.”

Whilst Palace have edged ever nearer to the elite Super League, it brings a number of additional issues, not least keeping hold of existing players;

“We knew that a number of our players were targets after the visibility and reputation gained last season. Again, due to the rules, we cannot fend off any such approaches, which can be quite precarious. Thankfully, our squad, to a player, wanted to stay. This is testament to the efforts across the club and the way the players feel about being a part of it. It is really rewarding to see this kind of loyalty.”

Whilst there has been no loss of players to other teams, the Eagles will be without the 2015-16 captain this season;

“Sadly for us, due to an amazing opportunity that has opened up for Katy (Morris), we will be losing our captain and a key part of our recent successes. We will all be sad to see her leave and wish her well in Canada – knowing that she will not be a stranger.”

Asked about the new additions, Davenport was clearly enthused;

“With Ciara (Sherwood), Megan (Goss) and Ellie (Bailes), we have a really good range of not only talent, but experience at good levels, including Super League and in the States. The girls have managed to fit straight in and become an instant and integral part of things.”

On possible further additions, Dean added;

“There may be some late activity. We are waiting on some clearances around a goalkeeper and will announce this as it is completed. It is more a case of when, not if. We also have a couple of other options, but as with all our work,  we are looking carefully at these and will only do what is right for the squad as a whole.”

Now playing at the highest level in our history, the women face more regular, tougher competition than before. This brings a whole new set of pressures and objectives.

Last season, things were very clear in terms of what we wanted and felt we deserved. This time around, the primary requirement is consolidation within the league, securing our status and a viable position to push on for the Super League, in the future.

Beyond that, there are ambitions that are respectful and realistic. We have a great first team set-up, now supported by three very strong, additional squads at reserve and development levels, so have the support in depth that the season ahead will need.

Whilst we know that a new mindset may be needed, we know we have the characters and qualities to deal with it. One thing is for sure, it will be an interesting chapter in the history of Palace Ladies and one we are all ready for.

Plans are progressing really well off the pitch too. The continued inclusion and support from Selhurst Park has been incredible, with the Ladies becoming an integral part of the whole club. We are also working very hard with partners and potential sponsors, in order that we provide the best resources possible for the teams. We hope to have news on some of these very soon and will be sure to share it on TEB as soon as we can.

The ladies play their last pre-season match against AFC Wimbledon at Bromley this Sunday. Kick off is 1pm.

The league campaign starts on Sunday 21st August against much fancied Coventry United at home, kick off 2pm.
