Eagles Frustrated At Selhurst But Extend Unbeaten Run

It was an afternoon where the newly promoted side prevented the hosts from getting their own way with a hard battling performance, but there were plenty of positives for Palace from another point gained.

BOB’S POINT OF VIEW

Bob White was a coach at Palace under the tenure of Steve Coppell and Alan Smith and will be sharing his point of view each week in our review article.

“After an international break, it usually adds a little unpredictability to a result and performance of the ensuing league game. So it proved, as Palace huffed and puffed to find an intensity and creativity to unlock a Sunderland team who were happy to sit deep denying space in key areas. Ultimately, the two teams cancelled each other out tactically.

The visitors rarely offered any challenge to our defensive unit, mainly relying on long throws and corners, both proving fruitless options with Henderson having very little to deal with.

Pino looks to have the technical ability to offer the team good offensive options. he reminds me of a young David Silva  seeing the picture around him quickly combined with an excellent first touch. Once Sarr and Wharton return, we should see greater creative options going forward. Together with Pino and Mateta, it should prove to be a potent attacking quartet.

Overall, we probably deserved more that the point. Sunderland, like many teams before them, coming to Selhurst for a share of the points making it difficult to breakdown.

The main positives were maintaining another clean sheer and extending an unbeaten run to ten games in the Premier League, which is an impressive feat.

My man of the match was Marc Guehi, as ever a calm and composed presence. His performance again confirmed how important it was not to sell him in the summer transfer window.”

POST GAME QUOTES

OLIVER GLASNER

“A little bit of mixed feelings. We could have won the game with enough chances but also credit to their goalkeeper. In the end we have to accept the draw, if you don’t score you don’t lose. But I think at the end we had to get a penalty. It was a clear penalty but we have to accept it.

I really liked the desire to win the game at the end. Still unbeaten after four games, it is okay. Yes, we are not really delighted but we accept it. We feel we are on the right track. We are always creating the chances. If we stay patient the goals will come.”

REGIS LE BRIS

“This is a really strong place to visit and we did well in the first half, we dominated the ball without many threats. In the second half they pushed, that is normal at home but we showed good character and resilience.

Probably we didn’t push enough to create chances. That is probably the next layer of the game. You never know but the connection so far is really positive. The players want to work together and enjoy being together. You have to improve every day.”

TEB VERDICT

This was a game where the Eagles should have gone on to win, or at least found a way to win but without two influential first team players, that proved to be the difference in the end.

The manner in which the game played out, it was clear that Adam Wharton and Ismaila Sarr would have had a positive effect, but take nothing away from the players that kept pushing for a winner.

Jean-Philippe Mateta had a real off day, and perhaps that had a lot to do with having to adapt to new signing Yeremy Pino, and Daichi Kamada being filling the slots either side of him. The two aforementioned players played well, with lots of positive from Pino who had two great chances to score.

Another new signing, Christantus Uche had a late cameo and was involved the whole time he was on the pitch. Two players that we are excited to see more in their Palace careers.

It is very hard not to mention an exceptionally poor refereeing performance, who made some very questionable decision, not least stopping the game for a visiting player suffering from cramp. The less said the better.

Notable individual showings from captain Marc Guehi, Chris Richards, and Maxence Lacroix.
