TEB VERDICT

First win at last, ole, ole!

This was the performance that we have been looking for so far this season which showed everything that was required to squeeze a win out of the visitors.

That is exactly what this group of players did with Adam Wharton showing form of last season, Maxence Lacroix immense at the back, Will Hughes brilliant off the bench, a superb assist from Eze and a winning goal from Mateta.

The relief shown by the players at the final whistle was there for all to see, what getting this first win of the season means to them. It was far from perfect but a much better showing and they reaped the rewards.

One quick mention to the official proving once again that officiating in this country is absolutely appalling, but let’s not let that get in the way of celebrating our first three points of the season.

BOB’S POINT OF VIEW

Bob White was a coach at Palace under the tenure of Steve Coppell and Alan Smith and will be sharing his point of view each week in our review article.

“My initial post-match thoughts centred around why we hadn’t seen such a high tempo and co-ordinated team pressing performance so before this season? Did Oliver Glasner believe the players were not fit enough to repeat the intensity we had witnessed at the end of last season?

Whatever the reasons, we saw a performance of quality and total commitment. Bottom line, we wanted the result more than Spurs whose performance was lacklustre. That shouldn’t detract anything away from our players who to a man played on the front foot. In possession we passed with purpose and out of possession hunted the ball back as quickly as possible in packs. This played a huge part in what proved to be the only goal in the game.

Glasner’s selection ensured players were in their most effective positions with Mateta providing a key focal point up top supported consistently by Eze and Sarr. Another key element was the astute passing of Wharton. He picks a pass quickly allowing the receiving player options to create good opportunities in the attacking final third.

The result was also based on a solid defence ensuring our second clean sheet of the season. The combination of Chalobah, Lacroix, and Guehi shows real promise going forward this season. Their strengths complement each other within their current positions.

My special mention in dispatches goes to the performances of Wharton, Sarr and Hughes but my overall man of the match goes to the outstanding Lacroix – a top class performance. Hopefully this tactical approach will be the blueprint going forward. Undoubtedly, if this is the case then we will see a rise up the table away from the relegation zone.”

POST GAME QUOTES

OLIVER GLASNER

“Congratulations to the players for how they played, with passion and courage. They showed it on the pitch against a good Tottenham team. We tried to be active at the end and there were some moments, but Tottenham are a great team. The players took it as a chance and every single phase of their play we played great and moved the ball. A very good performance.

I mentioned before the game that if we were convinced changing the formation was the solution, then we would do it immediately. Tottenham tried everything late on. The players did amazing and that is why we won this game.”

ANGE POSTECOGLOU

“It was one of those games with a lot of stoppages and battles, and they ended up winning a lot of them and coming out on top. There was a lot of disruption and it was hard to get any fluency. They did better than us.

It turned into a game they were thriving on and we should have dealt with it better. It was a poor goal to concede. It had nothing to do with playing out from the back, that can happen.

I would be very surprised if they were happy right now. Why would I be happy? If I’m unhappy then they will be unhappy. If you’re suggesting that our fans weren’t happy with today, then that is a fair assessment.”
