Eze Stunner Not Enough To Prevent Loss At Spurs

The Eagles returned from South London after another defeat at Spurs, and while there some positive signs, Oliver Glasner is slowly seeing the task he has in front of him.

TEB VERDICT

The manner in which this game was thrown away was frustrating but there were a number of positives before that happened, not least the return of Eberechi Eze, who scored a stunning free kick to mark his return from injury.

Unfortunately, whether or not the Spurs fight back would have happened anyway, the three substitutions that were made put us on the back foot. This is the only way that the new manager will find out about the players in the squad and the three that came on simply put, needed to do more. It is not a criticism of the changes at all, it is more that the replacements should have done far better than they did. Neither were the mistakes that let the hosts back into the game, things that must be cut out of our game.

Losing at Spurs is nothing new and this is the next game in the learning curve for Glasner and his staff, but the next three are hugely significant where points simply must be picked up in at least two of them.

POST GAME QUOTES

OLIVER GLASNER

“We gave the goals too easy to Tottenham. You must play perfect to win here. We did well for a long time but should have done it over 95 or 100 minutes.

Players did a great job, especially in defence. Tottenham didn’t find space. In defence we controlled the game. Maybe we could have been more confident with possession but this is part of our development.

It’s a disappointing result but a performance that gives us confidence and hope for the next weeks. Mistakes happen. Maybe it is a little tired, losing concentration. The players worked really hard to defend. I told the players’ chin up, stay positive’. I am sure we will improve.”

ANGE POSTECOGLOU

“All three of our leaders were outstanding. Maddison and Romero were involved in the second goal, Son with the third. It is a credit to them. They have a strong mentality and lead by example. They stood up when we needed them.

The supporters have been outstanding. They have real belief in what we are trying to do. We still have a long way to go in terms of being the football team we want to but I don’t think they have ever come to the stadium and thought the lads have not given everything.”
