TEB VERDICT

This result was coming and Palace only looked a threat when Eze came onto the pitch in the second half which says a lot. There are no excuses for this performance, but it is clear that injuries hindered any chance of going to Old Trafford and causing an upset against the holders.

Hodgson was very clear in build up to this game so we just have to hope that the game on Saturday in the Premier League will be very different. If it isn’t, then it is only right that questions are asked whether it is a tall order or not.

While it was great to see David Ozoh get minutes, it was less so seeing Jesurun Rak-Sakyi hauled off at the break. Perhaps the failure to bring in targets in the transfer window caused the youngster not to get his loan to a Championship club, but let’s just hope that this does not stunt his growth.

POST GAME QUOTES

ROY HODGSON

“We played against a good side and I thought we got a footballing lesson during parts of the game, so we aren’t happy about that. We thought we could give a better account of ourselves, especially in the first half. I thought the second half was marginally better.

“But the fact is we’ve got to regroup and get ourselves together. We come back here on Saturday. The personnel might be slightly different but it will be an equally difficult game for us because I’m pretty certain we’re not going to see a worse United than we did today.”

ERIK TEN HAG

“It was a good night, we played well and dominated the game. That’s what we are looking for. If you don’t win, of course there is frustration and disappointment and the mood is then dropping. But the spirit was always good, the togetherness was there and is there – you could see that today. We made a step forward at Burnley with how we defend, the togetherness and today on the ball we made another step. Still a lot to come but we’re moving forward.”
