TEB VERDICT

The Eagles made their way past Bournemouth with ease at Selhurst Park but took a little while to get going. Once they did, the likes of Eze, Ayew and Olise did the rest with plenty of exciting link up play and Eze doing the damage by continuing his hot goalscoring streak with a double. The only down side to the game was witnessing Zaha leave the pitch after picking up another injury which looked a recurrence of his hamstring pull that put him out for a few weeks.

Otherwise, Roy Hodgson was beaming while watching on at the side of the pitch as his players sealed an impressive fifth win in eight games and make certain of a mid-table finish with a couple of games left to play.

BOB’S POINT OF VIEW

Bob White was a coach at Palace under the tenure of Steve Coppell and Alan Smith and will be sharing his point of view each week in our review article.

“It started as a slow burner against a Bournemouth team who had recently gained some impressive results to steer themselves away from the relegation zone. So I expected a more competitive approach from them but in reality from the first to the final whistle Palace dictated the whole pace and flow of the game.

With 60% possession in our favour plus the opposition not managing one effort on target summed up our dominance in an excellent all round performance. Although the creative attacking players will quite rightly receive the media plaudits, our back four not only provided a sound defensive base which nullified any potential threats by Bournemouth, but was often the catalyst to our offensive play. This was perfectly highlighted when Mitchell won back possession and led to every outfield players contributing to 25 passes before Eze slotted the ball home from an Ayew pass.

In total it reflected 67 seconds of Hodgson football at its best. If that goal showed team possession with purpose at its best, the second was one of individual brilliance through the assist by Olise and a wonderful strike into the top-right corner by Eze. This was Eze’s 10th goal and Olise’s 10th assist of the Premier League season. Impressive.

Although today was an excellent team display with every player contributing to a professional controlled performance and therefore difficult to single out individuals, my joint man of the match award goes to the excellent Doucoure who dominated the key midfield area and to Eze confirming again that he is an exceptional talent. Maybe an England call up is on the horizon.

Hodgson must be given huge credit and respect for the overall improvement in our performances and results since his return. He has brought clarity and structure to our approach and freedom for the players to express themselves. The only negative was the hamstring injury to Zaha which may mean that this will be his final appearance of the season and quite possibly his last in the Palace colours.

Let’s see what the summer brings. Let’s hope we can continue the intensity and tempo seen today into our final two games against Fulham and Forest and aim for a final position as high as 11th.”

Joachim Andersen punched Jefferson Lerma in the face, he has a broken nose. I’m not sure what we have to do to get a penalty. It’s difficult on the pitch to see that, but I have no idea how VAR can give it as check complete.

He was in pain, his nose is broken, it was a strange incident. But there are other things I need to talk about. A penalty could have made a difference but Palace were far better.”
