With the World Cup in full swing, you would be forgiven for forgetting all about the domestic season.
However, the second round of the FA Cup took place at the week which lead to the third round draw taking place tonight. It is the time that all the hopes and dreams of Palace lifting a domestic cup, that is not the ZDS, kick into gear.
Palace were paired with a Premier League side, as Southampton head to Selhurst Park to take on the Eagles on or around 7th January 2023.
It will be the 96th meeting between the two sides and the fourth time in a cup competition in just over ten seasons. In those 96 games, Palace have won 32 while Southampton have been victors in 44.
Only one of those four cup games took place at Selhurst Park. Below is how those four games went;
21/09/2016 – League Cup – Southampton 2-0 Palace
Southampton made light work of Palace with a goal in either half sending Saints into the EFL Cup fourth round.
Charlie Austin put the home side ahead with a penalty after Shane Long was fouled by Martin Kelly’s challenge. Saints deservedly doubled their lead through midfielder Jake Hesketh’s first goal for the club just after the hour.
Connor Wickham had Palace’s best chance but failed to latch on to a loose back header from Jose Fonte inside the box.
09/01/2016 – FA Cup – Southampton 1-2 Palace
Wilfried Zaha’s second-half strike earned Palace a place in the FA Cup fourth round at the expense of Southampton.
It was the second season running the Saints have lost to the Eagles who went in front when Joel Ward fired in from Jason Puncheon’s pass. Oriol Romeu slotted in the equaliser after Cuco Martina’s effort was saved.
Zaha grabbed the winner when he volleyed in a loose ball after Puncheon’s strike had been parried. The Saints twice went close in the closing moments when Sadio Mane headed inches over before James Ward-Prowse’s brilliant free-kick was tipped past the post by Wayne Hennessey.
24/01/2015 – FA Cup – Southampton 2-3 Palace
Marouane Chamakh struck twice to inspire Palace to a thrilling win at Southampton and a first FA Cup fifth round appearance in five seasons.
The striker slid in a rebound to level Graziano Pelle’s prodded close-range opener as the sides served up four goals in 13 first-half minutes. Yaya Sanogo slammed in his first Palace goal with the aid of a deflection to cancel out Scott Dann’s own goal. And Chamakh sealed the win before half-time, rounding Fraser Forster to net.
25/10/2011 – League Cup – Palace 2-0 Southampton
Palace scored two second-half goals to knock out Southampton and book their place in the Carling Cup quarter-final.
The Saints had the best chance of the opening half when Jonathan Forte forced Palace keeper Lewis Price into a smart save. But Darren Ambrose put Palace in front in the second half when he slotted home from a cross by Jonathan Williams. Jermaine Easter then scored a penalty after Dan Harding fouled Williams.
