FA Cup Third Round Sees Palace Take On Millwall In South London Derby

A break from league duty and it is a trip to the New Den to face local rivals for the first time in what seems like forever. In fact, there will be a lot of fans from both sides that have never seen the two clubs play a competitive match against each other.

DATE

8th January 2022

KICK OFF

12.45pm

VENUE

New Den, Zampa Road, London SE16 3LN

LAST TIME

The Eagles last visited the New Den on a midweek evening back in April 2013 which ended as a pretty uninspiring goalless draw and only remember because of clash between Alan Dunne and Wilfried Zaha in the 90th minutes which saw both players booked.

ONE TO WATCH

TOM BRADSHAW

FORMER CLUBS – Aberystwyth Town, Shrewsbury Town, Walsall, Barnsley

The Welsh international has been in the goals so far this morning for the hosts and with that eye for hitting the target, he is likely to be a threat in this FA Cup tie.

KEY CLASH

MICHAEL OLISE v SCOTT MALONE

It is expected that the former Reading man will get a start in this cup tie and will be looking to impress with a number of key absentees for the Eagles. He is likely to be up against a wing back who is currently in his third spell at the club and has just passed 150 appearances for the Lions.

PRE-MATCH FACTS

  • Palace are unbeaten against Millwall in 4 competitive games
  • The Eagles last victory over the Lions was 1-0 at the New Den in December 2011
  • Palace have been losing at both half time and full time in their last 3 FA Cup matches
  • Millwall have lost 3 of their last 5 league games and sit 11th in the Championship
  • Palace have kept a clean sheet in their last 3 away matches against Millwall
  • Tom Bradshaw is the Lions top scorer in the league this season (7) followed by Jed Wallace and Benik Ofobe (5)
  • Palace have lost their last 3 FA Cup matches

DID YOU KNOW?

Millwall have had five different football ground locations during their history, four of which were on the Isle of Dogs, prior to the 1910 move to Cold Blow Lane, South of the River.

PREDICTION

Much will depend on the personnel each manager opts for but both sides expect to be much changed from their latest league fixture for a number of reasons, not least Covid and the AFCON. This will be an opportunity for fringe players to showcase their talents in front of what is expected to be a capacity crowd at the New Den. We are expecting it to be a tight game but think Palace will have just enough to edge past the hosts and proceed to the fourth round.

FINAL SCORE: 2-1 to the Eagles

BETTING ODDS

  • Home – 23/10
  • Draw – 13/5
  • Away – Evens
  • Both teams to score – 4/5
