ONE TO WATCH

DANNY INGS

FORMER CLUBS – Bournemouth, Dorchester Town (loan), Burnley, Liverpool

The 28-year-old striker had a brilliant campaign last time out and there is nothing to suggest that he will not carry that form into the new season. With two England caps to his name, he will be aiming to make the squad for the European Championships next summer and continuing to hit the back of the net regularly in the Premier League will likely secure that.

KEY CLASH

WILFRIED ZAHA v JAMES WARD-PROWSE

The events of that evening down at St Mary’s will not have healed easily for Zaha and even though the two have faced each other twice since then, there is no doubt that the two be in close proximaty of each other once again. The Southampton midfielder made his first start for England in the 1-0 win over Iceland last weekend while Zaha has had a very good pre-season.

PRE MATCH FACTS

  • Southampton have kept a clean sheet in their last 3 away matches against Palace
  • Southampton have won their last three away matches against Palace
  • Palace have failed to win their last 8 league matches
  • Southampton are undefeated in their last 7 league matches
  • In the last 6 games between the 2 sides, there have been 12 goals, 20 bookings and 1 red card
  • Palace have not managed to keep a clean sheet in any of the previous 6 games

PREDICTION

It is always tough to predict the outcome of the opening game of a new season, and this one is no different. The continued absence of fans will continue to be missed by some teams more than others but it is something that is looking like the new normal for the immediate future. Much will depend on whether the two sides continue their end of season form into this one, here’s hoping that is not the case from a Palace perspective. We are going to sit on the fence for this one and predict that both teams get off the mark to kick off the new campaign.

FINAL SCORE: 1-1

BETTING ODDS

  • Home – 11/5
  • Draw – 21/10
  • Away – 13/10
  • Both teams to score – 17/20
