League Cup Preview – Swansea City

The Eagles have a chance to get two Premier League defeats in a row out of their system with a League Cup trip to South Wales to take on Championship side Swansea City.

With the hosts almost unrecognisable from the side that were relegated from the Premier League last season, the appointment of Graham Potter is seen as a breath of fresh air who had previously impressed as boss of Swedish side Ostersund.

Already five games into the new season, Swansea suffered their first defeat at the weekend at home to Bristol City and currently sit tenth in the table with ten points. It is of course early days but it is a decent start for a team that has gone through plenty of transition this summer.

There is no doubt that both sides will ring the changes for the cup tie with fringe players looking to impress and push for a spot in the respective first teams. For Palace, it will be an opportunity to provide game time to the likes of Vicente Guaita, Cheikhou Kouyate, Max Meyer, Jordan Ayew as well as youth players.

CRYSTAL PALACE – James Tomkins (calf) and Jonny Williams (hamstring) are both major doubts while Pape Souare (muscle). Connor Wickham (calf) and Scott Dann (knee) are unavailable.

SWANSEA CITY – Jay Fulton (hand) and Oli McBurnie (toe) are doubts while Wilfried Bony (knee), Kristoffer Nordfeldt (groin) and Leroy Fer (achilles) remain unavailable. Cameron Carter-Vickers who has just signed on loan from Tottenham Hotspur may feature at some point but is not fit enough to start.

ACTION REPLAY

The last time these two sides met was back in December 2017 at the Liberty Stadium. Luka Milivojevic gave the Eagles the lead shortly after the break from the penalty spot. The hosts levelled through Jordan Ayew who came off the bench to score from distance to ensure the points were shared.

Who Scored man of the match – Jordan Ayew (7.8)

ONE TO WATCH

BERSANT EDVAR CELINA

Former clubs – Stromsgodset, Manchester City, Twente (loan), Ipswich Town (loan)

The 21 year old began his career in the youth set up at Norwegian club Stromgodset in 2007 before a move to Manchester City happened in 2012. With only one appearance to his name with City, the FR Yugoslav born midfielder enjoyed successful loan spells at Twente in Holland and Ipswich Town before signing for Swansea in July for a fee of £3million.

Celina has appeared for Norway at several different youth levels before switching to Kosovo in 2014.

PREDICTION

It is very difficult to make any predictions for this one ahead of knowing the attitude each manager will take this season in the League Cup. The Eagles will be keen to experience a win after not managing one since the opening day, while Swansea will want to be careful with limited personnel available with injuries to key players to contend with. This is an opportunity for Palace to show their strength in depth and will likely edge a tight contest.
