Fantasy Preview – Match Week 17

After what was a busy week in the Premier League we can take a brief breather before the Christmas schedule is upon us so here are my tips for your fantasy teams heading into the round of games this weekend.

Christian Eriksen – Midfielder, Tottenham Hotspur, 8.5

After a slow start, Eriksen has finally found his form. He has five goals and two assists in his last five matches and has now launched himself into a top five midfielder in the official game. The great Dane is very streaky so it’s better to hop on as soon as possible especially considering his MW17 opponents, Burnley, are averaging over two conceded goals over their last five matches.

Alexis Sanchez – Midfielder, Arsenal, 11.8

Not breaking any new ground with this one, but he has simply been too good to ignore with 50 points in his last five matches. Arsenal have the best away attack in the league and are coming up against a Manchester City side that have only managed three clean sheets all season. After this weekend, Arsenal will face just one top ten defence before February.

Andy Carroll – Forward, West Ham United, 6.1

After a long injury lay off, Carroll is back and ready to roll and finished with the second most shot attempts in MW16. He didn’t end up scoring against Burnley which was disappointing but has some excellent chance at the weekend coming up against Hull who boast the league’s worst defence and have conceded 2+ goals in half of their fixtures this season.

Matt Phillips – Midfielder, West Bromwich Albion, 5.5

Here comes that man again! Easily one of my best picks from early in the season, Phillips has been on an absolute tear of late (seven points per game over his last five matches). There are some tough fixtures on the horizon for West Brom but that doesn’t bother me much considering his price and role as a fourth or fifth midfielder

Virgil van Dijk – Defender, Southampton, 5.7

Van Dijk has been a bonus points machine earning the most of any defender in the Premier League. Southampton have turned things around defensively with four clean sheets in the last five matches and van Dijk is the most consistent of their defenders. The match-ups favour him in the long term as well with an easy run all the way through to Valentine’s Day.

Roberto Firmino – Midfielder, Liverpool, 8.7

I mentioned last week that I was considering dumping Firmino and now I’ve done it. Five straight blanks is just inexcusable for a player with this kind of price tag, especially when players like Adam Lallana and Divok Origi continue to churn out performances around him. Four matches against top five defences on the horizon do little do help his case.

Leroy Fer – Midfielder, Swansea City, 5.1

I bought in hard on Fer and have been rewarded by two consecutive matches in which he did not play. There is every chance he does play at the weekend but it’s very hard to trust him at the moment even at such an affordable price.

Joe Allen – Midfielder, Stoke City, 5.2

Once an fantasy darling, the fairy tale has ended for Joe Allen. He has now blanked in four of his last five matches mostly due to the fact that he has been playing a deeper role of late. On the whole, Stoke have struggled for goals scoring more than one in only four matches this season. It is time to drop him.

Christian Benteke – Forward, Crystal Palace, 7.7

This is much more of a sit than a sell, but things do not look great for the big man at the moment. He failed to put a single shot on target against United and now comes up against the joint best defence in the league (Chelsea). Things should start to look up for Benteke considering after this match he will face just three top ten defences before March.

Petr Cech – Goalkeeper, Arsenal, 5.5

Cech is currently the second highest priced goalkeeper in the game yet he has failed to keep a clean sheet since October. It’s definitely time to downshift for the 15.9% of people who still own him.
