Alex McCarthy Signs

Palace have announced the signing of Queens Park Rangers goalkeeper Alex McCarthy.

The 25 year old former Reading number one has agreed a four year deal year deal with the club for an undisclosed fee.

Born in Guildford, his youth career started at Wimbledon before moving on to Wycombe Wanderers and Reading. It was at the Royals where he made his professional debut in 2007.

The former England Under 21 international is used to travelling having had eight different loan spells during his time at Reading with his most successful being at Yeovil Town in 2009/2010.

After over seventy appearances for Reading he joined Queens Park Rangers in August 2014 but struggled to break into the first team ahead of Robert Green. A few Rangers fans had suggested that he deserved a shot at the number one jersey but only managed three appearances for the Loftus Road club.

He was called up for the England senior squad in 2013 but never appeared in the friendlies against Republic of Ireland and Brazil.

The arrival of McCarthy suggests that Welsh goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey may well be heading for pastures new with West Bromwich Albion looking favourites to sign him.
