Lionesses Reach Last Four – Reaction

In the early hours of Sunday morning, England’s Women knocked hosts Canada out of the World Cup to reach the semi finals.

The reaction on social media throughout the game and after the final whistle was the best that we have experienced since we became involved with the Palace Ladies.

We asked a selection of people to provide us with their thoughts on the terrific result as we look ahead to the semi final with Japan which kicks off at midnight on Wednesday.

It was a terrific result against the hosts. Not only for England as a football nation, but for English women’s football in general. With over 1.5 million viewers for a game that kicked off after midnight, it showed just how our side of the sport is attracting the audience and credit it deserves. It all bodes well for next season and beyond in English women’s football.  Mark Sampson and the squad have gone out to Canada with a plan and are delivering.

The spirit being shown and the ‘all for one’ attitude is clear for all to see. Without a doubt, playing the holders Japan in the semi will be the toughest test yet. This is what you expect when you put yourselves among the elite of the world game. It is a place where every footballer wants to be.  With the same determination shown so far and the luck that any successful team needs in tournament football, you never know.

One thing is sure, for the first time in their lives, anyone under the age of 23 is experiencing an England team in the semi-final of a World Cup. It is time for everyone to show pride in their lionesses.

Great to see an English football team play with pride and passion. They want to be there, they want to win it for the themselves and country. No diving or rolling around when fouled, no moaning at officials, no spitting all over the place. It is very refreshing to see, men should take note!

I am so proud of what the England girls have achieved so far. I hoped they would do well, but they have surpassed themselves and that is credit to the hard work they have put in. Hopefully, their success will be the springboard we need to push the game to the next level as they have shown how entertaining to watch and skillful the game can be. I really hope it will attract more investment and support as people take more notice and realise the women’s game is worth investing in.

 

 

We wish the England Women’s team the best of luck against Japan on Thursday. They will have a nation cheering them on against the holders.
