The Premier League team of the season was announced recently which got us thinking.
As a bit of fun we challenged our writers to pick the best player from each Premier League team and from that squad of twenty players, pick a starting eleven.
The choices have been put together and here are our results. In several cases there was only one choice but other teams had several nominations so our editor had the final say.
Let us know what you think through Twitter or Facebook. Are there any players that you would have selected instead?
Manager of the season – Tony Pulis. No-one outside of Selhurst Park expected Palace to stay up this season. This Welshman made it happen.
Crystal Palace – Julian Speroni. The official player of the season and well deserved in the eyes of our writers.
Arsenal – Aaron Ramsey. Even though he missed several games through injury he was instrumental in the Gunners early season form.
Aston Villa – Christian Benteke. An injury prone season for the Belgian but he showed enough when he was playing to be the pick of the bunch.
Cardiff City – David Marshall. Some say if he was that good then Cardiff would not have gone down. But he is that good and proved as much this season.
Chelsea – Eden Hazard. The only choice by our writers, the tricky Belgian midfielder was key to a star studded midfield at Stamford Bridge.
Everton – Seamus Coleman. This was a tough decision as there were several candidates but the fact remains the Irish full back had an outstanding season and weighed in with some goals as well.
Fulham – Steve Sidwell. The only choice from a poor bunch it has to be said and perhaps the only player that can hold his head high in an awful season for the club.
Hull City – Curtis Davies. He can perhaps count himself unlucky not to have made the England squad for the World Cup this summer after his form this season.
Liverpool – Luis Suarez. The only choice by our writers which is praise enough from a team full of players that would walk into most teams in the division.
Manchester City – Yaya Toure. An absolute beast in the middle of the park. They look a different side without him even with all the money in the world.
Manchester United – David De Gea. You could probably class this as a breakout season for the Spaniard after a season to settle in last term. There were question marks over his ability but he has proved his worth.
Newcastle United – Yohan Cabaye. It is telling that this player left the club in January. They had such a poor run to the end of the season after he left shows just how important to them he was.
Norwich City – Robert Snodgrass. One of those players that adds bite to any midfield but his form was not enough to keep his side up this season.
Southampton – Adam Lallana. A multitude of talents down on the south coast but a lot of what they did well went through Lallana this season.
Stoke City – Ryan Shawcross. As dependable as ever in the backline and a key part of a top ten finish this season.
Sunderland – Connor Wickham. Arguably was the key to survival after spending a lot of the season out on loan. Returned to the club and showed sparkling form just in time to help secure survival.
Swansea City – Wilfried Bony. The only choice and a player who shone for the South Wales outfit after a slow start.
Tottenham Hotspur – Christian Eriksen. A shining light for Spurs in an otherwise disapointing season.
West Bromwich Albion – Gareth McAuley. Perhaps an unsung hero in a poor season for the Baggies but one of the more dependable performers at the Hawthorns.
West Ham United – Mark Noble. A real consistent performer in the heart of the midfield.
From those twenty players our first eleven using a 3-5-2 formation would be the following;
- Manager – Pulis
- Goalkeer – Speroni
- Defenders – Coleman, Davies, Shawcross
- Midfielders – Ramsey, Hazard, Lallana, Toure, Eriksen
- Forwards – Suarez, Bony
