I Don’t Get It

With his views from across the pond, Stephen Brandt returns with a swipe at the Scottish champions …

Celtic are pissing me off, and that’s not good. You sell all these players, get into the Champions League, and DON’T GET ANOTHER GOALSCORER? WHY DO YOU HATE ME?

Okay, so people can say the money was spent on low cost players. But the strikers never see the light of day. Why spend the money if you are going to sit them? They could have won against Barcelona if the money was used the right way. This is something many podcasts and blogs have been complaining about for a while, and now I’m throwing my hat into the ring on this.

All that talk is about the PLC balancing the books, there needs to be transparency, balances and checks etc. That’s all well and good, given the current climate in the sport, but what brings in more money to a club? WINNING THE GAMES! Look up Herman Edwards and famous quotes, and you’ll see some corkers there, especially about winning the game.

“Stay focused. Your start does not determine how you’re going to finish”- Herman Edwards (former player, coach and now analyst in the NFL)

Spend a little every couple of years when you need to, and you can get a freaking double or treble. Celtic needs to go into the year playing for the treble, not to just eek out matches. The Scottish League isn’t horrible, like most think it is. The board however, is thinking small, and lowering the club to the level of the league and not to the level of Europe.

Why try that? Celtic are at a time in the league where they can be the flagship and a great reason to watch the league. Celtic going far, doing well affects the whole world, football wise and non-football wise. To think, that Celtic has fans all around the world, and the club just sits back wanting to spend little is annoying, and you should demand better as a fan. This isn’t advocating spending massive amounts of money and going into debt. No, it’s showing the fans that they can spend the money wisely and worthwhile.

Yeah I know that, the ‘Bhoys’ have signed players for very low transfer fees, built them up and made them into great players. That’s one of the many ethos of the clubs.

At some point, you have to break tradition and sign a player for five or six million that is worth a damn.

Transferring in players and then throwing them into reserves, is a thing of the past. We are a society of what have you done for us in the last thirty seconds. Keeping yourself in the spotlight, in a positive way, is the best way to make more fans, and keep current fans happy.

It’s not like Celtic is going to go out and sign the best young players, or spend massive amounts of money on a player. That’s just not the level that Celtic is at, and the fans know that. What they expect is the club to try every so often and spend enough money to give them a chance on the pitch when the referees aren’t out there to cook them.

Maybe I’m just overreacting.
