Two wins in a row, two clean sheets in a row and off the bottom of the league.
Right now, it feels a lot better to be a Dundee fan!
The performance that we saw the team produce in the win against Motherwell was simply day and night from what had been served up in previous games. This was by far the best we have saw the team produce on the pitch from day one of this season.
Every single player on the Dens Park field played with passion, determination and resilience. Every single player ran for every ball, never shied away from a challenge and were eager to get forward at every opportunity. The main thing out of all the above was, every single player played for the badge on their shirt.
This game was not without any controversy though and I’ll speak about this now so I can get back to lavishing praise on the team.
If you haven’t seen the highlights or pictures about Motherwell’s phantom goal then I urge you to witness it. I know a few Dundee fans are saying it wasn’t a goal but come on, that ball was surely over the line!? One thing is for sure, it’s about time we got a bit of luck coming our way.
Moving swiftly back to Dundee, even if Motherwell had gone in front with the ‘goal that never was’, I have full confidence that we would have still got something from this game. The new desire that the team were showing was as refreshing as finally being able to see Dundee win at home this season.
This ninety minutes also brought a few players best performances in a Dundee shirt so far for me. Tom Hateley and James Vincent I thought were both excellent. The latter has come under a huge amount of criticism from the fans and I’ll hold my hands up by saying that I’ve been massively vocal about Vincent in the Clep Bar after games but if there is something I do enjoy and that’s a player that can firmly shut me up.
Cammy Kerr also produced one of his best displays in what is the best position suited for him, at wing back. The utter joy that etched around his face as he bagged his first ever goal for the club he supports certainly made a few hairs on my arms stand up. This is one player who no matter how bad he may be playing, will always still get stuck in and won’t go missing. His celebration showed all the joy that any fan of the team would show if they were ever in his situation. The song ‘He’s One Of Our Own’ sums up Cammy 110%.
Now, have I missed someone out? Oh, yeah!
Ladies and Gentleman, we may have just seen the arrival of Craig Wighton.
Wighton has been around the Dundee team since the tender age of fifteen but in all honesty, it feels a lot longer than that. The hype surrounding him has been around even before he was even in the first team. We have seen glimpses of what he is capable of in the past few years but I feel that ultimately, the hype hasn’t transcended onto the pitch the way we had all hoped. There are reasons behind this such as being loaned out and in my opinion, being overlooked on numerous opportunities so it’s great to see him given a fair crack at cementing himself into the Dundee starting line up.
There was a new aura surrounding the player who Gary Harkins has called repeatedly ‘The Wizard’. What we saw was a more mature looking number thirty-three who wasn’t afraid to take the ball down and run at defenders. Wighton’s first touch throughout this game was magical and his movement afterwards was simply stunning. Looking back at the highlights, the ball was so close to his foot as he waltzed passed defenders, you would have thought he had it glued.
It’s a pity that the international break is upon us as there can be no question that Wighton and the team would want to be playing this weekend to keep the new found passion and run of wins going. We do have the Scotland versus England game to act as a substitute but the sooner we get back to domestic football, the better.
MON THE DEE!
