Liverpool’s eleven game unbeaten Premier League run came to end in sensational style in match week fourteen as they were on the wrong end of a 4-3 thriller at Bournemouth.
A Ryan Fraser inspired performance saw the Cherries come from 3-1 down, with the Scottish midfielder providing assists for the first and third goals and scoring the second, while on-loan Chelsea defender Nathan Ake netted the winner in added time.
The result meant Chelsea maintained their lead at the top of the table for another week. The Blues also came from behind to beat Manchester City in Saturday’s lunch time kick-off. A Gary Cahill own goal initially had the hosts ahead, although a second-half comeback saw goals from Diego Costa, Willian and Eden Hazard complete the 3-1 score line. The Citizens had Sergio Aguero and Fernandinho sent off late on and both will now miss their side’s game against Arsenal next week, along with the next two top flight fixtures.
Meanwhile, Tottenham Hotspur returned to winning ways with an emphatic 5-0 win over Swansea City. Harry Kane and Christian Eriksen both scored a brace, while Heung Min Son added another. Swansea have now conceded nine goals in their last two games.
Sunderland produced the shock of the weekend, beating reiging champions Leicester City at home. Robert Huth put through his own net before Jermain Defoe added a second. Shinji Okazaki scored a consolation with just ten minutes remaining.
Arsenal ensured West Ham United’s woes continued, with an Alexis Sanchez hat-trick the highlight in an excellent 5-1 win. Mesut Ozil and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain were also on target for the Gunners, although Andy Carroll’s goal meant they went without a clean sheet.
Crystal Palace’s seven game winless run came to an end at Selhurst Park as they surprisingly beat Southampton 3-0. Christian Benteke scored twice, his first two home goals for his new club, while James Tomkins scored in successive matches for the first time in his career. The clean sheet is also the Eagles’ first of the season.
West Bromwich Albion’s good run continued and they are now seventh in the Premier League table. They beat a stuttering Watford 3-1 at the Hawthorns, with goals coming from Jonny Evans, Chris Brunt and Matt Phillips. Christian Kabasele scored for the visitors before Roberto Pereyra was sent off for reacting angrily to a James McClean challenge.
Everton required a late penalty from Leighton Baines to earn a point against Manchester United. The Red Devils went ahead after Zlatan Ibrahimovic lofted the ball over the head of the onrushing Marten Stekelenburg, although substitute Marouane Fellaini clumsily brought down Idrissa Gueye in the penalty area late on, gifting the chance to Baines to score from the spot.
Burnley’s poor away form continued as they lost 2-0 at Stoke City. First half strikes from Jonathan Walters and Marc Muniesa, his first in English football, were enough to give the Potters the three points.
Finally, Monday night’s action saw Middlesbrough overcome Hull City at the Riverside Stadium. Gaston Ramirez scored the only goal of the game against his former side to ensure the Tigers remain in the relegation zone, although they are just a point away from safety.
