So Dundee hit rock bottom at the weekend when defeat at the hands of Hearts saw us drop to twelfth in the Scottish Premiership on goal difference.
Having been out the country all weekend and been struck down by illness since, I haven’t managed to get around to watching the full ninety minutes on DEETV but I have see the brief highlights on the BBC website and read up on the match reports.
It’s never a good feeling to see your team sit at the bottom of the league. I do genuinely believe we have a better team than a good few of the clubs above us so it’s a bitter pill to swallow. Of course, at the moment it doesn’t mean squat if I think we are better than other clubs because the cold hard facts are that we are where we are.
Taking in a good few news reports about the game and the ever reliable official match report which says it like it is with no biased opinion, we were unlucky to come away from this game with no points. In fact, it would seem if Lady Luck had been hanging around the away dressing room before hand, one of our FOUR shots that rattled the woodwork before Hearts scored would have generously ricocheted into the net. She wouldn’t be on our side though and we would suffer our fourth straight defeat.
I’ll stand by what I’ve said previously since we started this run of bad form, the team will come good and results will follow. Of course, the more games that pass by without a victory, there is an element of doubt that creeps into my thoughts, especially when you see so many disgruntled fans calling for the manager to walk or be sacked when looking at our current plight.
The next week see three massive games for Dundee.
First up we visit St Johnstone followed by a midweek game at home to fellow strugglers, Partick Thistle. We then travel to Hamilton.
A trip to McDiarmid Park always brings tight games between the two clubs and that’s how I think this Sundays dinner time clash will be against St Johnstone. Our record isn’t exactly the best against the Perth Saints away from home, only being able to taste victory twice in thirteen appearances, but most games have only been won by a single goal.
St Johnstone are a team that never strike me as being that great on the eye but I admire the way they set out, get results and continually finish high in the league. There is no doubt in my mind they will make it hard for us and if we do win, I’m going to predict it will be a scrappy one with many a heart stopping moment for us Dee fans.
The big match for me though is when Partick travel up here next Wednesday. A win here is an absolute must for us. We haven’t managed to win any of our home games in the league this season and you would have to go all the way back to the night we relegated Dundee United in May for our last win. They have also only won a single game all season and again just like us, it came on the opening day of the season. As much as we are desperate for victories, Partick will be just as eager.
Depending on results this weekend, we may or may not be on the same points but if we want to be safe from any relegation or play off spots this term, grabbing wins against teams like Partick are priority.
I’ll speak more about the Hamilton game in next week’s article after seeing how these two games pan out.
So from here until next week, I’ll have my fingers, toes and anything else I can crossed in the hope we can string some results together. Four points from the next two games (preferably three of them coming against Partick) would be like an early Christmas for me at such an early stage of the season.
In the meantime, keep the faith and MON THE DEE!!
