El Bakhtaoui Off The Mark But Dundee Have To Settle For Point

If they handed out awards for being draw specialists, Dundee would have a trophy cabinet full of them.

When Kilmarnock rolled into Dens Park on Saturday, I was expecting nothing less than a win for Dundee and from the kick off, it would seem that it would be the only conclusion. Unfortunately, the result would only bring back that old familiar feeling of what could have been.

It took us less than ten minutes to take the lead with Faissal El Bakhtaoui opening his scoring account for the Dee after he tapped home from six yards from a fine free kick from debutant Tom Hateley.

We looked comfortable and despite a few attempts from Killie, I could not see them scoring against us. That feeling was quickly extinguished when Souleymane Coulibaly produced a spectacular overhead kick to level the scoring. It was truly something from nothing but what a strike it was.

In the second half we pushed on in an attempt to reclaim the lead and came close on a few occasions but it would not be our day. Even after being reduced to ten men following the sending off of Kevin Gomis, we largely dominated the game but we missed that creative spark needed to open up their defence. Seventeen shots were attempted on their goal but only three made it on target. Call me a moan or doom and gloom merchant all you want but that’s simply not good enough.

Also it was clear that we were missing a big target man up front to hold onto the ball or lay it off for another striker. To the people reading down South, you will not know the player I am about to mention but to the Dundee fans, they will surely be in agreement. We can do with a Willie Falconer type player up front for us.

So that was that, a third draw in a row. Though I can have no complaints about the draws with Hamilton and Motherwell, we should have really won against a Kilmarnock side that did not impress. At the end of the day though, it was still a point to add to the tally and we remain a team that is hard to beat.

Next up we have another home game which will be sure to be the toughest yet this season. We welcome Aberdeen to Dens Park which will take place on Sunday, kick off 12pm live on Sky Sports, so make sure you tune in.

Right away we will be missing the suspended Kevin Gomis and possibly Darren O’Dea who came off injured early on against Killie. If O’Dea misses this game, then it will be a massive blow for us as I have seen him as one of our top performers this year.

We have not defeated Aberdeen in twelve attempts and even though I have had a wee moan about drawing games earlier, I would gladly take a point from this match straight away.
