TEB Interview – Giles Paley-Phillips

In our latest interview we feature another author and Palace fan Giles Paley-Phillips. If you are looking for stocking fillers this Christmas for youngsters then it may be worth checking out ‘The Fearsome Beastie’ and ‘Princess Stay Awake’ to name just two. We thanks Giles for taking the time to chat to us.

Q. So let us begin with the easiest question of them all, why Crystal Palace?

I started supporting Palace in 1989. I just thought they were such an exciting team and in the town I live in, in Sussex, Seaford, there is quite a community of Palace fans.

Q. Who is your favourite player to have worn the famous red and blue?

I always loved to watch John Salako, his trickery and determination was always great to see.

Q. Which Palace game do you have fond memories of?

I always enjoy the mid-week games under the floodlights. There was one particular cup game against Liverpool, which eventually went into extra time, the atmosphere was just electric that night and I remember having to leg it all the way to East Croydon to catch the last train home.

Q. Perhaps you could share your view on the Tony Pulis departure and the appointment of Neil Warnock?

I think like the majority of Palace supporters, I was very disappointed by the departure of Tony Pulis. In particular, the nature of it. To leave just days before the start of the season showed a lack of respect for the club. Whatever the reasons, I just thought that was very unfair on everyone involved in the club from the players right through to the supporters. I think Neil Warnock was a surprise choice for many, but I can totally understand the board going to him. He is obviously fond and passionate about the club and that is no bad thing. He has something to prove in the division as well, so it could turn out to be a good move.We shall see!

Q. It is always a bumpy ride being a Palace fan but the last few years have been some of the best in our history. How do you see the future for the club?

I guess the most important thing over the next couple of seasons is to stay in the division. If that is possible, then it is more than feasible that Palace could be pushing for a top six finish but staying in the division is paramount at the moment.

Q. If you played for Palace which position would you play and what would be your squad number?

Number two. A solid right back.

Q. With your early background being in music, tell us about your passion for writing and how did it all start?

I started writing when I found out my wife was expecting our first child. I just felt that I wanted to write something for our new baby and then it just kind of carried on from there.

Q. Do you find any inspiration from watching Palace when coming up with ideas for stories or does it hinder?

It is never a hindrance watching Palace and a good win is always an inspiration. Games of football have many moments of drama.

Q. What do you find the most rewarding about being an author and do you have any tips for budding writers?

I do a lot of events, mainly in schools and festivals. I love that aspect of being an author, getting to read my books and inspiring new readers.

Q. And finally, tell us about any projects that you are currently working on or anything that you wish to promote.

One of my books The Fearsome Beastie is currently being made into an animation short with voices being provided by Brian Blessed and Alison Steadman. You can follow the account on Twitter as well as my blog for updates.
