The Eagle Speaks – Expectation

A big welcome back to our popular weekly feature The Eagle Speaks ahead of the brand new season.

It is the editor here stepping in for usual writer Paul Price to take a quick look ahead at what we have in store for you as we hold on tight for another rollercoaster of a season in the top division of English football.

As we look forward to the next nine months of Premier League football, it is still difficult to come to terms with the level of achievement the club made last season. A side that was one of the favourites to go down finished in just outside the top ten which is arguably one of the stand out achievements in recent years.

It leaves us fans with a bit of a dilemma going into the new season – what should we expect by the time the curtain falls on all the glitz and glamour in early May?

As a Championship side there is nothing wrong with a club like Palace looking at being promoted as their sole aim. As a Premier League side there is nothing wrong with looking to achieve survival. With the season that we had last time out, it makes it that much more difficult to know what we should want out of this season. Survival, a top ten finish, challenging the top six or just consolidation?

A personal view is survival and we know that has to be priority. We know our place and while last season was absolutely fantastic, the famous phrase that is so often used is ‘second season syndrome’.

We have more than the spine of the team from last season so why not be bold and predict another high finish? Because this is Palace and while it is the club I adore, it is also the club that has never done what I ever expect of it.

This feature will continue throughout the season to bring you views from a fan on all possible topics that take more than a passing interest. It is more often a Palace related feature but a foray into other themes such as ‘Against Modern Football’ like we did last season were very well received indeed.

We hope that you continue to enjoy what we bring from this feature. Please interact with us throughout the season which so often provides us with inspiration for articles. You can do that through Twitter, Facebook or leaving a comment to articles on the site.
