TEB VERDICT

The excitement of transfer deadline day and the midweek win at Bournemouth was instantly forgotten as the half time whistle blew amid a chorus of boos and chants of ‘you’re not fit to wear the shirt’. The sad thing is, you cannot blame the Palace faithful for airing such feelings as it was dismal half of football but losing to a relegation rival is such dramatic fashion was inexcusable. What hurts fans most is the apparant lack of passion from the players, in fact, Sam Allardyce looked the most upset about it than anyone and rightly backed the fans reaction. It is very difficult to see where Palace go from here but the players need to take a long hard look at themselves. This is well and truly a relegation battle and the sooner the players realise that the better. Perhaps the only way is up now?

PLAYER RATINGS (courtesy of Who Scored)

13 Wayne Hennesey (5.6) – Continues to make the wrong decision at keys points and struggles with his footwork. Very little confidence in the Welsh goalkeeper at the moment.

2 Joel Ward (5.7) – Continued in the wing back role which he performed well in midweek but really struggled in this one for the majorty of the match.

6 Scott Dann (6.2) – Just about the pick of a poor back line but huge concern towards the end of the game as the side were effectively playing with ten men after the captain picked up an injury after landing awkwardley.

5 James Tomkins (5.8) – Was turned all too easily for one of the goals, not his usual confident self in a defence that clearly struggled.

27 Damien Delaney (5.7) – Paid the price for a disappointing first half which ended being confronted by a fan. Replaced by 10 Andros Townsend (6.9) on 45 minutes who added some pace and urgency to the second half even though the game was effectively over as a contest.

3 Patrick van Aanholt (5.9) – Verbally abused throughout the game from the visiting fans but worked the left side well throughout but rarely threatened.

18 James McArthur (5.9) – Tried to play his usual game but struggled like his teammates, certainly not for the want of trying though. Replaced by 8 Loic Remy (6.4) on 62 minutes who looked lively and wanted the ball, created one chance for himself but ended with a weak effort straight at the goalkeeper.

7 Yohan Cabaye (6.3) – Started brightly but never really recovered from a hard early challenge. Replaced by 16 Joe Ledley (5.3) on 27 minutes who was another who struggled, his error led directly to the second goal.

42 Jason Puncheon (6.2) – Conisitently made mistakes while in possession which kept putting the defence on the back foot.

11 Wilfried Zaha (6.5) – A frustrating afternoon for the winger who became more and more dismayed by the close attention he was receiving. Still worked his way past defenders on occassions but rarely found that final pass.

17 Christian Benteke (6.7) – All too often found himself isolated but worked hard in possession to create a chance. Came close to getting on the scoresheet on more than one occassion.

Unused substitutes – Julian Speroni, Mathieu Flamini, Mamadou Sakho, Zeki Fryers

WHAT THE MANAGERS SAID

‘Fear gripped the players and it hasn’t allowed them to express their ability. I cant think it can be anything other than that. It is a difficult one because the fans are so good here. They come to support the club. It was a sell-out today. They are desperate for the club to do well.’ – SAM ALLARDYCE courtesy of BBC Sport.

‘We knew the task we would be up against but we took our opportunities when they came along. Once we got the goal you could see the confidence grew. I don’t think I can think of many times as a manager I have been 4-0 up at half-time, I don’t know if I ever have been. It gets us three points and more confidence, more belief. It is going to be a tough job but if we had lost it would have been much tougher. Every game is must-win.’ – DAVID MOYES courtesy of BBC Sport.

  1. Remember Big Mal?
    Well now its Big Al.
Another coach met him and said try this one for confidence building.

Line up six dustbins – ask the players to dribble around them and shoot into an empty net.

Al was asked a week later – “How did the players get on?”
“Go away – The dustbins won 4-0!!! he replied.
